The organization Svet ticha (World of Silence) received the Roma Spirit 2025 award for its exceptionally valuable and systematic work in the field of inclusion of deaf Roma – one of the most vulnerable and overlooked groups in Slovakia. This recognition is not only an award for professional efforts, but also a powerful symbol of social recognition for people who have been standing on the border between two worlds for many years and often remain invisible.
Double marginalization: a reality that cannot be ignored
Deaf Roma face so-called double marginalization – overlapping barriers associated with hearing impairment and ethnicity. These two lines of disadvantage multiply each other, deepening distrust in institutions, reducing opportunities for quality education, and significantly complicating access to adequate services.
The World of Silence does not shy away from this problem, but has been systematically mapping it over the long term, evaluating it professionally, and translating it into practical solutions that meet the real needs of people in the community.
Their approach is based on a deep understanding of cultural contexts, respect for the identity of deaf people, and expert knowledge of the communication, educational, and social barriers they face.
Comprehensive support that changes lives
Svet ticha’s award-winning approach is based on a set of sophisticated interventions that have a long-term impact:
- Equal access to education – from professional sign language interpreting to individual mentoring programs that help children and young adults overcome invisible barriers.
- Support in entering the labor market – professional counseling, assistance in communicating with employers, creating inclusive working conditions, and supporting employers in building an open work environment.
- Access to legal, social, and administrative services – assistance with official negotiations, interpreting services, support in dealing with complex life situations, and guidance on legislation.
Behind each of these activities are a number of experts, interpreters, social workers, and field workers who work daily where conventional systems often fail.
An award with a powerful message
Roma Spirit 2025 is not just a trophy—it is a recognition of courage, expertise, and humanity. It draws attention to a community that is too often overlooked, as well as to an organization that has been working for a long time and with great sensitivity to ensure that their voices are not lost.
The World of Silence shows that inclusion is not a one-off project, but a long-term process requiring respect, perseverance, and a professional approach. This award is proof that high-quality professional work can change systems—and, above all, the lives of specific people.
This award belongs to everyone who supports us, believes in our work, and helps us fulfill our vision of an inclusive and just society every day.
We would like to thank the Roma Spirit jury for their trust, our partners and supporters for their invaluable help, and last but not least, the entire Roma community for their cooperation, trust, and inspiration.
Together, we are proving that change for the better is possible.
