We are pleased to announce the launch of a new campaign called “Together we create a community of deaf Roma”, which was created in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. The aim of this campaign is to create a space for the visibility and support of the deaf Roma community in Slovakia and to create stronger ties between its members. We support inclusion and equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of disability and ethnic origin.
CAMPAIGN AIMS:
The Together we create a community of deaf Roma campaign has several key goals that will contribute to building an active and interconnected community.
- Raising awareness of deaf Roma – The public often does not have sufficient information about the challenges deaf Roma face. Our goal is to highlight the obstacles that Roma with disabilities face.
- Education and support for community members as well as helping professions, educators and social workers – We will provide educational programs and support services that will help helping professions, social workers and educators to gain a deeper understanding and acquire the skills necessary for working with deaf people in the Roma community.
- Breaking barriers in communication and inclusion – As part of the campaign, we plan to create special programs and courses that will support communication between deaf Roma and the wider society. We also plan to collaborate with sign language and Romani language experts to ensure mutuality and cooperation of language skills.
What activities are part of the campaign?
The campaign includes various activities aimed at supporting and developing the deaf Roma community:
- Educational workshops – Focused on improving communication skills and supporting legal awareness and civic responsibility.
- Cultural and social events – They will serve as a platform for presenting the culture of deaf Roma, in the form of video recordings in sign language.
- Collaboration with experts – We involve experts in the field of social inclusion, educators and sign language interpreters, who will contribute to the successful course of the program.
This The campaign is unique in its content, namely that it focuses on deaf Roma, who face double stigma – both because of their ethnicity and because of their hearing impairment. Their needs are often overlooked, which is why this project is so important. We believe that the campaign Together we create a community of deaf Roma will bring positive changes, increase the self-confidence of its members and contribute to building a more open and tolerant society.
