2024 DEAF ROMA AND THEIR PLACE IN SOCIETY: FROM LANGUAGE ISOLATION TO INCLUSION

MINORITY RIGHTS GROUP – MARIO

A project focused on mapping and analyzing deaf Roma, which included examining the social, cultural and communication aspects of this specific group, which faces double marginalization – as deaf people and as members of the Roma community. The aim was to obtain comprehensive data on their numbers, language preferences, access to education, employment and public services, with an emphasis on identifying obstacles that prevent them from fully participating in social life.

2025 WE CREATE A COMMUNITY OF DEAF ROMA TOGETHER

MINISTRY OF JUSTICE OF THE SR

The main goal is to enable Roma with sensory disabilities to fully exercise all their rights under the UN Convention Art. 21, everyone has the right to information and ideas on an equal basis with others, through all forms of communication of their choice. The project aims to reduce the negative psychological and social impacts of discrimination by providing community-based and accessible counseling, social and legal services for deaf Roma in Slovakia. Many deaf Roma do not speak sign language, nor do they speak Romani or Slovak. They use simple signs acquired in the community. The project is aimed at improving the quality of life in the deaf Roma community, living in socially excluded communities. It focuses on mapping the specific needs and challenges of this community and identifies the individual needs of deaf Roma in order to propose targeted measures to improve their living conditions and inclusion in society. The project also provides training for workers working in this area. The project’s output should be a comprehensive strategy for the inclusion of deaf Roma through educational programs and support services.
